Has it been a smooth road?
I wanna say, love, yourself. It’s ok to love yourself. There is a difference between selfishness and selflessness. And I feel as human beings we need a perfect mixture of both, a balance between the two. Both are necessary because there takes a little selfishness to push you to do better. At the same time remaining selfless, just because you reach a certain point doesn’t mean only care for your own feelings. Love yourself enough to do better but balance. Not everyone is going to believe in you or help you in your journey. A lot of people want to see you do good but not better than them. Be your own fan and follow your dreams but most importantly, follow your heart. If you have a dream and you know what you want, go for it. You don’t need permission or to prove and defend yourself to anyone. Never let haters knock you off your square. If people are hating on you good, that’s a great sign that you are doing something right. Those same haters will wanna follow what your blueprint and copy your moves when you get where you wanna be. I guarantee there is a hater watching everything you do pretending they are not inspired. Don’t quit. Keep up the good work.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into your story. Tell us more about the business.
I am an upcoming filmmaker. I started as a reoccurring extra on ABC “Mind Games” in Chicago. After being on set and collaborating with other filmmakers throughout the years, it just stuck. I have always been a creative kid in some way. I knew this was my passion after my first time. I was always first to arrive and last to leave the set. I saw a different perspective everytime the director said action. After watching the same scene 20 plus times, you get a different perspective every time. I wrote my first film two years ago, and for two years it’s just been on paper, I really wrote it not typed lol. I was at Art Basil Miami 2016 I was standing next to Swizz Beats, DJ Heron, Fat Joe, KRS One and more. KRS one said, “some of you have some great ideas just sitting, follow your dreams”. I was like, by golly he’s right! I’m going make this once and for all. So I made my first short film “Not Just Another Girl” it has been nominated three times and has won an award at “Royal Wolf Awards”. I’m still working on the full-length film, but the short has been winning. So you can call me a filmmaker, but I’m simply an entertainer.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I was told “good luck! Not many women succeed at filmmaking. Just look at the numbers”. I believe in myself whether my movies are good or bad I’m a filmmaker, and that won’t change. I won’t even speak about this long because as a woman I will create opportunities.
