Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Pearlman.
Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I graduated from the University of Miami 15 years ago. Now, 15 years later, I return to my old stomping ground.
After graduating from the University of Miami with my Bachelor of Science degree in 2008, I had the opportunity to study medicine all over the country. I completed my MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, urology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, followed by fellowship training in men’s health and genitourinary reconstruction at Wake Forest in Winston Salem.
I started off my career as Director of the Men’s Health Program at the University of Iowa and recently relocated back to South Florida to co-found Prime Institute with my twin sister (a gastroenterologist), Dr. Michelle Pearlman.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been both a smooth and bumpy road and I wouldn’t want it any other way! My journey in medicine has been fairly smooth- I went straight to medical school after graduating with my undergraduate degree. Each training program (medical school, urology residency, fellowship) has had its challenges (surgical training necessitates long hours, working in high-stress environments, little sleep, and high levels of competence), though I learned how to be resilient and resourceful in the process.
I recently made a big career change – I left my busy practice in a tertiary care academic center in the Midwest to start a private practice with my twin sister in South Florida. Being a business owner and entrepreneur, in addition to being a physician and surgeon is humbling, to say the least. It’s also very exciting and I learn something new about myself and how to best care for patients and their personalized needs every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a board-certified urologist with particular expertise in male sexual health, male hormonal health, and genital reconstruction. I meet with people via telemedicine and in person to best understand their current health conditions and their goals for optimizing several aspects of their health. I have a passion for educating people on the basics of their bodies- from this foundation of knowledge, we can discuss small changes each person can make daily to feel and perform better.
Medications and surgeries are also very helpful tools for many people and I discuss evidence-based, innovative, and effective treatment options with each person I meet. I am most proud of my communication style- to be able to sit down with folks, discuss topics and concerns many of them have never verbalized to anyone before, and come up with a plan they understand and want to pursue.
I give people my time, energy, and expertise and, in the process, am able to develop incredibly meaningful and productive therapeutic relationships with my patients.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In general, I don’t consider myself a risk taker. However, I recently took a very big risk in my career. I left a very stable and successful surgical practice in a large academic institute, moved across the country, and started a new practice with my twin sister. Risky move? YES!
