Conversations with Manessa Lazare

Hi Manessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Manessa Lazare, owner and founder of Glamour By Ness Makeup Studio. Born as a Miami, FL native, and currently reside in Nashville, TN, and a graduate of Nova Southeastern University. My passion for makeup was birthed when I relocated to Orlando, FL in 2009 to complete my Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration at the University of Central Florida (UCF), and later my MBA in HR at Nova Southeastern University. My inspiration came from the guru herself, Jackie Aina. Jackie’s tutorials provided an escape into a creative world I knew nothing about. Upon getting professionally certified as a makeup artist in 2016 from Victoria Duke Beauty, I began providing makeup services part-time while maintaining full-time employment as a Human Resources Manager, my second passion.

I provide Human Resources solutions to corporate clients by providing strategic support for large employee populations in the medical and corporate environments through technology, compliance, and people. I view makeup as an art form, treating each makeup application as unique as my clients themselves. I have an undeniable passion and vision to develop Glamour By Ness into a unique beauty and HR consulting brand that services clients from all walks of life. As we are currently in times of uncertainty in 2020, I found myself facing another obstacle, unemployment. I, along with millions of Americans faced the inevitable; but with my faith and support of family and friends, I persevered. Through the turmoil, I launched a long-time dream of mine, selling Luxury Mink Lashes. Phoenix Lashes was birthed as an extension of Glamour By Ness in June 2020 and I am thrilled to also extend lash extension services; adding a lash extension to each individual lash. In my spare time, I enjoy working out, traveling, spending quality time with family, volunteering with Hands-on Nashville, and getting glammed!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road; in the Winter of 2017, my mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Breast Cancer. I had just relocated to Nashville, TN for an HR Business Partner role and I felt hopeless. I made my best efforts to go home, and that was in part of having a supportive HR leader and colleagues. Taking over the makeup scene in Nashville took a back seat as a result of this life-changing moment. Through these tough times, I was able to still network, make friends, and join a talented group of makeup artists that I now consider family. In the Spring of 2020, I lost my job as a result of COVID-19 and leaped at the opportunity to make a lifelong dream a reality, launching Phoenix Lashes as an extension of Glamour By Ness. The global pandemic taught me that I am resilient, I am bold and fearless about my endeavors, even in my personal life. I now have a new zest for life and vigor that I did not possess before, and I am happy to announce that I have been certified as a professional lash artist.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently an HR Business Partner for a Property Management group. I was laid off as a result of COVID-19. I have been in Human Resources for eight (8) years. It is a passion of mine. Growing up as a Haitian woman, it was drilled to myself and sisters that having an education is the key to open the plethora of opportunities as a Black woman. I have an extensive background in strategic and innovative Human Resources affairs. This includes experience in recruitment and retention, conflict resolution, HR record management, legal compliance, and audits.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Stay the course, keep going, keep pushing to discover your purpose. Do not worry about how the inevitable is going to happen, the Divine will always align you with the right people to help you achieve your dreams. And once those dreams are realized, dream a new dream. I wish for someone to have shared with me that life is not a straight path and that failures are opportunities to position you to win.
