Conversations with the Inspiring Yulissa Munoz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yulissa Munoz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Yulissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I spent my whole life on a diet, worrying about weight and allowing my weight to determine my worth. This feeling of unworthiness showed up in my life in many ways, including workaholism. I worked in the Luxury Travel Industry for about 15 years and although I feel super blessed to have had that experience, (traveling the world and assisting others with making their travel dreams come true), it didn’t shake the fact that my entire worth and identity as a human being were wrapped around this career. Without it, I felt I was nothing. I realized then that something had to change.

After years of feeling insecure about my body and ashamed to walk into a Yoga class, I was introduced to someone who would become the catalyst in my journey and who would inspire me to take a leap of faith. She allowed me to feel comfortable going to a group Yoga class, breathing and just listening to my body. Little did I know, that starting Yoga would lead me to where I am today. It provided me with the space and time, to expand and transcend all the limiting beliefs. It led me down a path of Body Liberation, Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating. A path of RADICAL Self-Love and Body Acceptance. I was hooked, determined and finally felt I found my path. Within a year, I took Yoga Teacher Training, developed a Yoga & Meditation practice, went to India and then launched my personal brand: Yogi Yuli.

I was ready… I finally decided that I was worthy and stepped into my personal power.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to radical self-love, body acceptance and entrepreneurship continues to be a journey. There are moments, sometimes days where self-doubt and fear take over my psyche. And moments where I get sucked in by diet and body image culture. It is in those moments that I allow the feelings to FLOW through me and not attach to them. I remind myself of my true essence. I am LIGHT. I am LOVE. I am ENOUGH.

I remain open to possibilities as they come up and allow myself to experience life fully, at this moment fully. When I was laid off from my high paying corporate type job, I had a moment of shock, worry, and FEAR. I allowed myself 24 hours to cry and panic, then I decided that I was going to TRUST. The Universe has always supported and guided me, so why would that stop now?

I used to focus on worrying about the future or reliving the past. NOW I live and enjoy the present moment. Because THIS moment is all we have.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Today, I am a Private Yoga Teacher and Coach, with a part-time job as an Office Manager for LEAP (Ladies Empowerment Action Program), a nonprofit organization in Miami that provides transformational education and resources for women in prison and supports them post-release.

Through my journey came the movement I call: Love Your Body, Love Your Life, a series of yoga classes, workshops, and retreats. Here, I create a confidential and compassionate space to help women step into radical self-love so they can embrace their own power and inner wisdom.

I combine healing modalities from yoga, psychology and yogic philosophy to teach body compassion, intuitive eating, and self-acceptance. These are all concepts that I have adopted through my personal development journey to reach a healthy relationship with food and my body. Through my teachings, I incorporate Health at Every Size principles that celebrate movement, pleasure and listening to our body’s natural cues for hunger and satiety instead of restrictive eating.

Yoga is the gateway for me to experience Radical Self Love and Body Acceptance, and I share this with the world. I create the space for women to empower themselves. I support others in leaving the diet culture behind. I use movement to find healing and peace.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Community is an integral part of our human existence. It calls for us to have the courage and walk without fear, standing up for inclusivity and diversity. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of some truly incredible human beings! I have surrounded myself with communities that encourage, empower and celebrate growth.

My Yoga Teacher, Claire Zovko, owner at Lighthouse Yoga & Wellness (Miami Lakes); continues to be my teacher and spiritual guide.

I joined the Mina Meetings, developed and led by Mina Shah. This is a personal development and accountability group, where Mina teaches us business & life skills, allows us to set goals, complete action items and stay accountable and committed to our lives.

And more recently, I joined Las Comadres, a powerful community of women supporting each other on the journey, founded by Gaby Guzman.

Last but certainly not least, I’ve received incredible support from my closest friends, loved ones, and family members, for which I am truly grateful.
