Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Florez.
Carolina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I became a tour guide when I wanted to change of pace in my life and I very quickly grew a passion for it. I started off doing bike tours in South Beach while simultaneously working as an activity leader for a language school and also going to school full time. I stuck through many bad days and always kept improving and trying to figure out how I can grow this passion into something full-fledged. Now, I’m in the process of creating my own hospitality management company while still managing my own independent tour guide business and working as a tour director for the Miami Tour Company. It’s definitely a challenge to juggle all my activities but with good time management I have found that I can do it all, maybe not very fast, but it is doable.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth having comes easy but I have found that if you keep your perspectives positive then no obstacle can really bring you down. Everything happens for a reason and if something didn’t work out there was a reason for that. Take all the obstacles you face and turn them into motivators instead of weight holding you down. My advice is to follow your passion because if you show true love for it the money will come naturally. Keep your head up but most importantly, keep yourself educated.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I do many different things and my life is a cycle of change so nothing is too routine for me. I’d have to say that at the moment what I’m working on the most is finishing up school. I graduated with my first Bachelors this December and my other bachelor next December. I am a double-major at FIU doing International Business and Hospitality and Tourism. In regards to my independent tour business what I do there is organize itineraries for groups, take them around the city, and we explore the cultural and historical aspects of Miami. My goal with tour guiding us to give Miami the best image and to completely erase any leftover stigma we have from the 80s drug scene. And finally, I work full-time as a tour director for the Miami Tour Company. What sets me apart from the others is the energy I bring to what I do. Usually, tour guides are older and they can be kind of dull so I always try to bring an interactive experience for my guests and make history fun.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
One of my biggest sources of inspiration is my boss Michelle who is the owner of Miami Tour Company. Her selflessness and dedication to customer service is something a lot more people need to have especially when working in the hospitality industry. She and her husband Gus have shown me the value of treating your employees right and how that leads to only better products and better output. I am inspired by many women such as Katie Bouman, the MIT graduate who leads the project of taking the first picture of a black hole, as well as Alexandra Ocasio Cortez, who has shown young women that you can be the voice of change no matter where you come from.
