Today we’d like to introduce you to Aroon Duncanson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aroon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first came to Miami as a full time model and blogger, I was working with a few agencies in South Florida and constantly shooting and expanding my portfolio. After a year went by, my mother and I had the idea to start up a business together. So, my combined experience in the marketing world, and her artistic talents came together to create Livin’ the MAD Life, which is a vegan purse line designed by my mother. I decided to model for our brand, since it’s what I knew and we wanted to keep the message as a mother/daughter brand.
I still work part time as a model and blogger, but have also extended into more PR work. Working as a publicist and manager for a few different companies. I LOVE marketing and advertising and love any work that involves either. My undergrad degree is advertising/public relations and I definitely put that knowledge to use in bot modeling and my business.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was most definitely a difficult road. The modeling and blogging world may look glamorous online, but that just means they’re good at it. The truth of the matter is, blogging and modeling takes hard work, as does any job. It’s working for yourself, which means you have to be your own motivation and you have to choose your own work hours. It means constant hustling and looking for your next job and pushing yourself to work harder. And it means your income can fluctuate drastically from month to month.
The hard truth:
The main, and most obvious, struggle for me was maintaining my “ideal” figure for modeling. I have been an athlete my whole life, and through college also. I’m built like an athlete and my body takes to muscle very easy. It took me a long time to figure out what my body would take, as far as exercise and diet, to maintain the “ideal” body shape that I wanted for modeling. And that regimen was not an easy one for me, some months I would be at the gym 3-4 hours a day, and eating only raw vegetables and some fruits. No alcohol and minimum refined sugars. I did not realize I was unhappy until I decided to stop care so much. It’s so amazing to see how society is slowly changing their standards of the modeling world, it makes it easier to accept your body and maintain a more healthy mindset.
The main advice I have for any young women in this world is to put your happiness, well being and mind at the top of your priority list. Spend everyday practicing to love your mind, body and spirit. Because at the end of the day, if you are unhappy with yourself, nothing else will feel right. And when you are happy with yourself, everything good will come to you. Not only that, but being able to motivate yourself and stay focused on your goals is hugeeee! I can not tell you how many times a day I envision my future and my goals, I manifest everything in my mind everyday, without fail.
After deciding to change my focus from what I looked like, to focus on what I felt like and what I thought, I’ve become a bajillion times more happy with life.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Livin’ the MAD Life story. Tell us more about the business.
Livin ‘the MAD Life is a vegan, designer purse brand by my mother, Megan Duncanson and I. We focus on creating fashion that is still gorgeous but not at the expense of a living animal. It can be hard to find nice quality, vegan fashion, especially purses. So we wanted to offer an option for those looking for something unique and vegan.
We have also kept our brand focused on female empowerment, my mother has created a set of her own symbols that stand for empowering things, such as inner love, strength, etc, We wanted the designs to incorporate some deeper meaning to brighten up the lives of those they touch.
As far as myself, I am in charge of most everything besides designing the purses. So, I do the social media, advertising, marketing, interviews, planning, events, selling, everything! Haha, my mother and I run through big decisions together, but I will ultimately be the one who you see face to face.
We have been on Deco Drive, Telemundo, Kansas City Live, Daily Flash, Veg News, Live Kindly and quite a few other media outlets.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My mom! She is the biggest inspiration to me and she is the sole reason why I am where I am today. Without my mom, I’m not sure where I would be or what I would be doing. Which is why it’s so great to be able to work with her and create a company together!
