Today we’d like to introduce you to Vee Escarment.
Hi Vee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a native of Miami and I have been singing and acting since the age of 5. Growing up, I performed a lot. I was in the school choir, church choir, musical theatre, and film. I have won many awards in the Arts from Music Student of the Year, Outstanding Performance, and Soloist of the Year. I have performed all over South Florida including Hallandale Elementary School Black History showcase, Derrick Thomas Celebration of Life showcase, Voices in the Night showcase, TBN the Trinity Broadcasting Network as a Soloist, and Barry University’s Founders Day Show as a vocalist. These events have been televised. I have performed lead roles in musical theatres and operas such as Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Carmen, Funny Girl, Porgy and Bess, Rent, Cabaret, Once Upon a Mattress, Saigon, Ghost of Christmas Past from Scrooge, and Fiddler on the Roof. I was one of the Praise Team Lead vocalists at Trinity Church. In 2004, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to sing backup in an ensemble for Latin Singer Luis Fonsi at the 2004 Latin Billboard Awards. While there, I got to meet Gloria Estefan and Alicia Keys backstage. After graduating from Barry University with a Bachelor’s in Music for Vocal Performance, I worked as a Legal Assistant for a law firm for a year. I was dissatisfied in my career choice and I quit that law firm. I pursued a career as an Actress and Singer. I worked on the Dream and Neyo music video set. My film credits include principal roles in independent films such as Naked, Unguarded, web series Miami, Very Social, and Ball and Chains Wedding: Locked in Love. My film credits for television include principal roles in America’s Most Wanted, The Percentage, and Playin for Love.
Through the bookings, I became a SAG AFTRA member, which is the Actors Union. Once acting TV work slowed down in Florida, I started working in the nonprofit housing counseling sector in 2013 as a Housing Counselor helping people to save their homes through Florida’s Hardest Hit program and the Principal Reduction Program. I was able to help hundreds of clients from foreclosing on their homes. The organization I worked for also conducted First Time Home Buyer Programs. I was able to help hundreds of clients purchase their homes as a first-time homebuyer. In 2016 I left that organization and started working for the Urban League of Broward County. There I taught workshops on budgeting, credit, financial literacy, home affordability, and the First Time Home Buyer Workshops. I assisted clients with one-on-one pre-purchase counseling, credit counseling, post purchase counseling, and foreclosure prevention counseling. I provided information and assistance regarding readiness and preparation for homeownership.
This may include services such as down payment assistance, home exemption, home inspection, and home affordability. I advised and assisted the clients with the necessary steps to help correct any derogatory information on the clients’ credit report in order to improve their credit scores and help the clients become more prepared for the home buying process. I evaluated their mortgage readiness, Fair Housing Education, budgeting, credit analysis, and money management. I worked very well with the clients and many of my family and friends would ask me, “Have I thought about starting my own business in this field?” In 2019 I stepped out in faith and launched Generational Wealth through Homeownership Inc a 501c3 nonprofit housing counseling agency. Our mission is to change lives and empower communities, one person at a time, by creating generational wealth through homeownership.
We service the low to moderate-income families in the Tri-County areas of Miami Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County. We service the South Florida Community and beyond in homeownership, credit counseling, post-purchase counseling, and financial literacy. Being a life changer, helping clients begin their legacy for their families and creating generational wealth for their families! As a homeowner, I find great pride in helping others achieve the American Dream and build generational wealth! We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, even being in the industry for eight years. Some struggles I faced in the beginning, was funding, getting my 501c3 certification, and creating my business plan. Once launching my businesses, I took business development workshops, read books, receive advice from my mentor, and I prayed to God. I had to learn how to run a business and I had to choose my Board of Directors. I seeked God for wisdom. I wrote the vision and made it plain. Success has to be specific and intentional. I had to establish a plan of execution on how I was going to get there. I had to set a timeline to reach my goal. I had to be persistent and consistent. I had to invest in myself! I had to change my mindset. For my nonprofit organization, I contacted many corporate partners to get sponsorship and I was persistent. I was able to receive funding. I applied for grants and I was denied some grants. I continued to move forward and had faith that it would work out. I started building relationships and creating partnerships.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Right now, in the Housing industry, interest rates are very low and it’s the perfect time to purchase a home! I do see a shift taking place next year. There will be a high percentage of foreclosures. Due to the pandemic, a lot of people lost their jobs and are unable to make their mortgage payments. There will be lots of housing inventory available at great discounted rates. There are going to be lots of deals and the financially stable individuals will be buying up land and properties. There is going to be a lot of empty commercial real estate spaces. For affordable housing, there are developers who are creating container homes that are very cost-effective. There are developers focused on giving back to the community and creating affordable housing and rental properties. Multi-family properties are becoming very popular. Many areas throughout the nation are going through regentrification. Regentrification is the restoration and upgrading of deteriorated urban property by middle class or affluent people, often resulting in displacement of lower income people. In many of those regentrified areas property values have risen tremendously. Real Estate will continue to build wealth!
