Today we’d like to introduce you to Itohan Ighodaro.
Hi Itohan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am Nigerian but have spent most of my adolescence years in the United States. I’m a proud graduate of Florida A&M University where I studied political science and Law. My passion for politics sparked in college, in an intro to political science class, I was extremely fascinated by the idea of participatory democracy, this notion that we all have the power to create and shape the society we wish to live. I have spent my career advocating for greater citizen participation, my passion is rooted in a fair and just democratic process. I’ve worked on local, statewide and nationwide candidate and issue-based campaigns throughout the country, supporting progressive candidates and issues with bold ideas to collectively lead and move this country forward in an equitable way. I went on to establish a first of its kind Political Firm, Hard Knocks Strategies, a leading Democratic firm in the country for registering, persuading, and turning out voters. Hard Knocks Strategies made history twice in its very first electoral cycle, leading the Independent Expenditure ground game for both Gillum’s upset victory in the Democratic Primary for Governor, the successful passage of Amendment 4 with FRRC, followed by being a finalist for 2 Reed Awards in 2020 and 2021 including “Best New Firm”. I am also the founder of TurnOut Strategies, a political and policy firm focused on helping to develop sustainable infrastructures to move progressive work. When I’m not managing and building campaigns, I’m working on my passion project and new business venture, FitfriendMe. Fitfriendme is a wellness brand with a digital application designed to help you locate workout/accountability partners anywhere. FitFriendMe incorporates community support and fellowship into fitness to help keep people on track and improve their workout productivity and overall quality of health and life. Fitfriendme host a free monthly fitness event; #FitFriendMeetUp to help people kickstart their fitness and wellness journey with communal support.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is never easy nor is it smooth, one of my best qualities is my ability to push through obstacles, and I’ve had amazing examples of resilience and tenacity along the way. Through my life’s journey, I learned very early on, if you do not define yourself for yourself, others will create a narrative of you that you will eventually succumb to. My life has known a lot of struggle, but it’s also seen a lot of triumph. I’ve experienced homelessness, discrimination; in and out of work environments, racism, sexism, having my work co-opt and hijacked, but I wouldn’t change a thing about these experiences. My faith in God teaches me constantly that no condition in life is permanent, and it’s in these moments of uncertainty that God reveals his nature and his plans for our lives. I pull from my personal experiences when I’m on the frontline advocating for change, not saying advocacy requires personal experiences, but as humans, we would like to believe our obstacles and challenges are unique to us, but it’s not, we all desire the same things, and I believe if we all come to this realization, and stop leading from a scarcity mindset, the world will be a much better place.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

How do you define success?
My definition of success has completely changed over the years. While success is synonymous to achieving wealth, respect, or fame for many, for me, success is a state of mind and soul. Success is trusting and believing in yourself when no one else does. It is being able to make unpopular and tough decisions that require sacrifice and discipline. I measure success with a soul search and the health of my soul, what good is it for someone to gain the whole world yet forfeit their soul? Blessings or the things we acquire in life is a great responsibility, it’s never really ours to keep.
