Check Out Ernesto Gutierrez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ernesto Gutierrez.

Hi Ernesto, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a young adult, I always loved anime and always knew that it was one of the few things that brought me joy, therefore I decided to make my passion my job. I started out in Nicaragua which is my home town and started going to expos to get a feel for what the business in anime was like, thankfully we sold out everything and things started to look up for me. I was very excited as my small business continued to grow, but things in Nicaragua started getting bad, there was lots of protests, and the government became even more corrupted.

I made the last final step to move to the United States, and at first, I had to settle for a job that did not make me happy, but it gave me the money I needed to start up my business again. The rest is history and I hope to further expand my business as my love for anime continues to grow.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth, but that’s the exciting part of it all. It encourages me to keep working hard and it challenges me even more to become the best I can. I’ve had lots of rough patches, including debt, governmental corruption, and trying to adapt in a new country while a pandemic was just starting. So, definitely yes, I’ve struggled, but it’s all worth it in the long run.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialized in Digital Marketing and got my master’s, and I did work on that for a while, but it didn’t bring me happiness. I worked for a lot of companies such as Rolex, Cartier, and Bulgari, and although the pay was great it wasn’t enough for me. I am most proud of my store, as cliché as it sounds, I have put my all into Blackjack, it’s my pride and it’s also my joy. As a young kid living in Nicaragua I always wished to visit a store like mine, and now that I have one I see the joy in kid’s eyes and that is priceless. I think what sets me apart from others is the genuine love I have for anime, and how I want this store to be a place that’s inviting to everyone.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
What I would like for the readers to learn from my journey is to always follow your dreams and aspirations, and to not be afraid to take risks. I let go of a high-paying job to start my business and everyone doubted me, but I believed in myself and I knew that with hard work, everything will eventually pay off.
