Check out Gabriela Sousa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Sousa.

Gabriela, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was halfway through my business degree when I attended my first wedding. I was admiring (and taste-testing) the extravagant dessert display when I noticed a woman holding a clipboard and instructing someone to put more dessert where I had just taken some from. That was when I realized that there was a person making sure that all aspects of that night were perfect at every moment. That was when I learned that the event industry existed and that I wanted to be part of it.

After that wedding, I found a couple of internships in catering offices of hotels and learned as much about weddings and events as I could. I wanted to experience as many types of events as possible to figure out what I liked, so during my last two years of college, I worked with, volunteered at, and got involved with social events, corporate events, food festivals, sporting events, and others. I eventually got a job as a catering administrator at the Biltmore Hotel, where I got to meet and work with many of the best luxury vendors in the Miami area. While working at the Biltmore, I would occasionally work assisting a celebrity wedding planner with weddings all over the country. Between working at the Biltmore and working with such a high-end wedding planner, I truly learned from the best in the industry, and my planning standards were set really high.

Upon graduation, I got accepted into the Disney Professional Internship program to work in the Disney Meetings & Convention Services department for six months. I gladly accepted the offer and extended my contract for another six months to work in the Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings department. It was all a dream come true.

When I returned to Miami, I was offered a job back with The Biltmore, but I had so much fun working weddings at Disney that I decided I wasn’t done playing fairy godmother just yet and decided to start my own wedding planning company.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create peace of mind for my couples during what could be, a very stressful time in their lives. I believe that your wedding day is one of the most special days in your life, It’s a day where you’re not only celebrating love with your union with your significant other, but it’s also one of the few, if not the only time, you’ll get the most important and special people in your lives together in the same room. Because of that, my goal is to make my couples and their families feel like guests at their wedding, so they can truly enjoy the day celebrating with their loved ones.

But we’re not only there for the wedding day, we work with our couples for months prior to their wedding day, to ensure that nothing has been overlooked. For our Full-Planning couples, we’re there every step of their wedding planning journey, to ensure that it is a fun and exciting process.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
With the rise of social media, I believe that it has become easier for artists to showcase their work. More specifically, for us in the wedding industry, social media has allowed us to connect with brides and grooms without pressure. It gives potential clients a chance to get to know their potential wedding vendors before committing to a consultation, which can be overwhelming and intimidating for couples in the early stages of the planning process.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
