Check out Damian Fyffe’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damian Fyffe.

Damian, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have been In the Film Industry for over 15 years. I started as a Production Assistant. Back in 2003, I was working at Channel 10 as a news video editor. One fateful night I worked on a music video as an intern. It was my first On set experience. I was Amazed by the lights, the equipment and all of the fast-paced work going on around me. That night I decided what my new career would be and about two weeks later I up and quit my job at Channel 10 and started working freelance as a Production Assistant in the Film Industry. During my PA years, I also worked as an Art Dept assistant. I then worked my way up to an Art Director, and now I have been directing as well. Directing is my ultimate goal. I have been getting a lot more directing work in the past few years and getting closer to reaching this goal.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
When I work as an Art Director, I pay a lot of attention to detail. Everything in the frame should look in place or balanced. I Love designing and dressing a set with stylish contemporary ideas. I started from the bottom Art Directing smaller budget music videos. You have to be very resourceful when there isn’t a lot of money available to get the job done. Over the years I’ve obtained a lot of knowledge and experience in executing certain design with very little resources. That’s where the creativity comes in. Now that I have big budget projects that I design, I can stretch that budget and deliver so much more to the client. My hard work and dedication over the years paid off in 2017 when I was nominated for an MTV VMA’s nomination for “Best Art Direction” for the Video “Wild Thoughts” by DJ Khaled feat, Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. That nomination has done a lot for my career in a short time. I credit my team as well. They really make me look good and help in the whole process. I’ve always believed that you’re only as strong as your team!

When I am directing, I use all of my Art Direction experience a Production knowledge on every one of my productions. I look through the monitor with an Art Direction eye. I make sure that every detail looks great and that we have an amazing picture. I am able to use my design ideas and styling experience to create amazing imagery that’s all my own.

Starting from the bottom in this business really gave me a sense of the industry as a whole. I am knowledgeable and understand every department on set. So if there’s a problem on any of my projects that I am directing, I immediately know how to solve it. I am fortunate to have this experience and give thanks for those beginning years of my career.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I’m not sure if the role of artists has changed. As artists, what we do is create Art. Events locally, nationally and internationally might have an effect on what we do, but I would say indirectly as opposed to directly. That is just within my experience personally.

I do believe that no matter who you are and what it is you do, being aware of what happens in the world and making conscious decisions of how you live your life is important.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
