Today we’d like to introduce you to Picture Show.
Picture Show was created by Lillian Cassidy (Vocals) and Jeff Spencer (Bass Guitar and Vocals) from the ashes of another band. The previous band was a pop dance band that was doing a lot of contemporary top 40 music. After that group disbanded, Lilly and Jeff thought about creating a band based around a concept. We went out and watched what bands were doing at their shows. What type of music were they playing? What type of “show” were they putting on? Many of them were great bands, but many were playing the same songs which were either classic rock or top 40. It was a live “jukebox.” We wanted something more than that, something that was not being done by other groups. We knew that we wanted to disrupt the “idea” of a band and create “a show”! Something that the audience could be a part of and be able to have an experience full of surprises that leaves them both entertained and wanted to come back over and over. Picture Show was born!
Like most groups, finding the right members takes time. When we found Boyd Morgan (Drums) and “Rock-n-Roll Jay” (Guitar) We knew that we had the right lineup to do what we wanted to be able to do. Having a small lineup of talented people of the same mindset gives us that small band with a HUGE sound!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
“Different is good!” Picture Show strives to break the mold with every musical creation while hosting an interactive experience that wows our audiences or as we say, “The Party Starts with Picture Show”! It all starts with the song choices. Whatever the genre of music from hard rock to classic rock, to 80’s pop we approach it the same way. We learn a song the way it was recorded by the original artist and then deconstruct it, change it, and make it sound like “us,” like a Picture Show song. We spend a great deal of time in recomposing and/or changing arrangements, creating mash-ups, and putting our own rock edge on everything we cover from Madonna to the Charlie Daniels Band. We combine these songs with a concert-style stage show that the audience has the opportunity to be a part of. Whether we have contestants on the dance floor with inflatable guitars during the air guitar competition, couples competing in the “junk in the trunk” contest, or even the popular beer bucket “strong man” competition, there is always something exciting happening in a Picture Show event!
We have taken this same approach to our upcoming original EP album. When you have a cover band, it is not always clear what kind of a band it is because you perform so many different kinds of songs, but even in our “covers,” we have created an “Original and unique” Picture Show sound! In creating that full show of unique cover songs, we created a sound that easily transferred over to our original material — songs that everyone can sing to with a rock edge that feature elements of musical technicality and powerhouse vocals.
Much of our original music tells a story. Many of the songs tell personal or biographical stories or speak of modern-day issues that most people can relate to. Although we have hundreds of musical influences from both past and present, we strive to have our original music sound like Picture Show songs. Not just to sound like other groups. We are currently recording our Debut EP “Dusk Till Dawn” shortly after the first of the year and already have eight other Originals to release thereafter.
We want to show everyone that different is good! Change things up! If the “rules” don’t work for you, create new rules! And above all, create without limits!
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
We always encourage artists to network with other artists in their local communities. Too often in the “local music scene,” bands are at odds with each other, and it becomes competitive. We focus on cultivating a “music family” environment in our local communities and seek out opportunities to share our music whether it is in charity showcase events with other groups, supporting other groups by attending their events, or connecting through musician social media platforms. Support local music, musicians and the venues and sharing your enthusiasm and passion for the creative always helps with creating those connections.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
After playing all over Florida’s Space Coast for the past four years, Picture Show in 2019 is expanding and will begin playing live in other parts of Central Florida as well as South Florida to include being booked at some of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino properties throughout Florida. We can be followed on our website, www.PictureShowBand.com, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages as well as our YouTube channel. Currently, we are showcasing behind the scenes demos of our original songs on Reverb Nation.
