What’s the Most Important Lesson You’ve Learned Along Your Journey?

Every twist in our story, challenge we face, and obstacle we overcome is an important part of our story.  These difficulties make us stronger and wiser and prepare us for what’s ahead.  As we grow and succeed we may imagine that soon the challenges will fade away, but in our conversations with business owners, artists, creatives, academics, and others we have learned that the most common experience is that challenges never go away – instead they get more complex as we grow and succeed.  Our ability to to thrive therefore depends heavily on our ability to learn from our experiences and so we are asking some of the city’s best and brightest: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?

Jake DeLucia | College Student

The most important lesson I have learned on my journey so far is to embrace adversity, and that within adversity lies opportunity. Life is amazing when the sun is shining, but rain is always going to come. Instead of letting the rain get you down, look at it as the nutrients you need to help you grow and blossom into a better version of yourself.

The importance of individuality. You can’t be afraid to be unique, to see the world in a different light. I consider myself a visual storyteller, perspective is my most powerful tool. While my style is rooted in the past, I welcome the non traditional. It’s your story after all, and it’s important you tell it your way.

Julie Mejia | Owner & Designer

As a small, slow fashion business owner trying to succeed in a market where fast fashion is king, it’s important to keep my ethics prevalent as part of my social responsibility by providing sustainable and quality products.

Lulu Marcano | Co-Founder | Alchemist Revolt

There’s a Damien Rice song that says “if love is not for fun, then it’s doomed”. Well, I believe this about love and everything else. The way I see it, everything in our life should be conducive to fun: our work, relationships, hobbies, travels, food, exercise. And I realized a long time ago that I am the person in charge of bringing fun (active joy) to each area of my life.

Stephanie Pope | Owner | Creator, ENEZ Swimwear

The most important lesson I have learned in my journey thus far is that creating a successful business doesn’t happen over night. It takes lots of time, energy and persistence put towards it every day. I’m a one-woman-business so I’m still learning and trying to figure out what works and doesn’t work along the way but the entire process is so much fun to me. It’s very satisfying and rewarding looking back and seeing all that has come together to be ENEZ Swimwear in the past three years starting as just a side job and hobby to now my full-time job!

Rodney aka DJ Triumph | Music producer | songwriter

God is good, faithful and always strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.

Katie Hirschman | Retail Professional & Fashion Stylist

The most important lesson I’ve learned in my journey thus far is that change is healthy. Whether it be job, location, relationship, friendships, etc. the longing for something more means that you are not satisfied with where you are at. We tend to get stuck in complacency and mistake that for happiness when really we have an underlying desire for more that we push off to the side. Change is healthy, challenges are healthy, and although they are not easy we can’t back down or shy away from a new challenge as it inhibits personal growth. If we are not growing and evolving personally we are only hurting ourselves and those around us.

Learn to be yourself, to be authentic, to be unique and don’t compare yourself with others. Don’t worry about people lives missing the uniqueness of your own. The beauty of it, is your own journey.

Chanel Divine | Spiritual | Psychic Advisor | Reiki Master and Dance Instructor

The most important lesson I’ve learned in my journey so far, is Self Love. Self Love is probably one of the hardest things to achieve in a society where you are going against the grain of everyone’s standards, opinions, and rules. Self Love requires you to step fully into your authenticity, and accept yourself wholly and completely. It allows you to make decisions for yourself that aligns with your highest and best path, regardless of other’s opinions. It allows you to live an abundant life filled with joy, happiness, and peace!
