#LadyBoss: redefining what a boss looks like

Too many of us grew up only seeing one kind of boss or leader in the media. The lack of representation for other groups reinforced harmful stereotypes and acted as a self-fulfilling prophesy, but would our opinion of what a leader looks like be different if the media did a better job at representing the true diversity of leadership in America?

Women and other under-represented groups are already leading many great companies, organizations, & academic institutions; others are authoring best-sellers, building engaged audiences, leading movements and more.

We had the honor of connecting with many of the best and brightest female leaders from in and around the city and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.

We encourage you to check out the female leaders we’ve highlighted below, follow them on social media if you find their work or story interesting and most importantly do your part to #fightstereotypes.

Manuela – Nursing Student

Challenges are as big as we allow our mind to perceive them. Whenever you may come across one, remember nothing is off limit if it’s on this world… so GET TO WORK. You got this and much more.

Ashley Diaz – Fit, Fashionable Working Mom Married to a Chef

Look for help! There is always someone more knowledgable and willing to pull you up to their level. Find people who you feel comfortable with and if you don’t find anyone, rely on God!

Emma Louise McAleer | Personal trainer and nutritional scientist

Stay positive and Breath! Everything works out exactly how it supposed to and worrying is just wasted energy. I think it’s good to always look at the bright side. I know sometimes it’s hard to stay positive but every cloud has a silver lining! i will always take something from everything I go through whether that’s a lesson or a blessing – your still learning and growing.

Often we feel like we’ve been buried underneath and no one will ever understand our fears and we’re stuck in a tunnel often seeing no end, but nothing is more powerful than truly embracing your problems and fears and letting yourself be affected by it. We live in a society where it seems like being sad, angry, or scared is the worst possible thing that could happen to anyone but a very wise person once told me “every flower must grow through dirt,” meaning nothing worth have RARELY comes easy. Always make sure to take a look at yourself and truly accept that you are unique in this world, and there could be someone LIKE you but no one will ever BE YOU and that is what makes all of us different. Through struggles there will always be growth and change and often times even when we do not succeed at something we always learn. So never give up going after what you truly want.

Irina Giordano | Singer & Songwriter

Keep in mind we did not come to this world to feel small. We are here to achieve. We are here to overcome barriers no one has before. We are here to evolve. And if you think or feel frustrated because there are some things a bit more challenging than others, maybe it’s true. But the key to face those challenges is to take a step closer to your goal day by day. Don’t get overwhelmed trying to achieve it all at once. Day by day, nourish your plant and you’ll see how one day it will become a beautiful tree.

Guessly Almyr | Luxury Sales Professional – New mom

The best advice I can give someone who is facing a challenge is to keep pushing; on the days that you feel like you absolutely cant go on, is when it is imperative to push yourself and do it anyways. Get out of bed, pray, and face the challenge head on! The big break you are looking for is on the other side of this challenge.

Catalina Montes | Fitness & Mindset Coach

First, I want you to take the longest, deepest breath of your day. Sometimes, we get so carried away by our current problems and struggles that we forget to stop for a second and breathe. The simple act of breathing in deeply can help your body get back into a more relaxed and focused state of mind. Whatever you are going through right now is helping you grow and transform into who you are meant to be. Instead of constantly asking yourself “why is this happening to me?”, I want you to replace it with “what is this trying to teach me?”.

Megan Jo | Yoga & Marketing Guru

When you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep moving forward anyway. Most likely, you’ll be surprised to find the light wasn’t where you thought it would be.

Anna Akumova | co-founder of @shareitstudio, Miami based digital marketing and content production agency

My advice for someone who is facing a challenge they feel is insurmountable is to see it as a moment of growth. Spiritually or professionally, but eventually it’s gonna make you a better person.

Megan Morrison | AKA MORRISON – Singer, songwriter, fire performer, actor, and model

You can do anything you set your mind to no matter how impossible it might feel. We are stronger and more capible than we think! Also, never be afraid to ask for help. You don’t have to do it on your own. Just four years ago I was battling alcohol addiction and overcoming it seemed at feat next to impossible. I knew I needed to make a change so I gathered all my courage, put aside my pride and asked for help. Now I’m living a life that I never could have dreamed of before. I am truly happy and more confident than ever. I’ve used something that used to be a weakness and turned it into strength. You have control over your life, but only you can make the decision to make things happen.

Dayanara Nevarez | Ecuadorian Fashion & lifestyle blogger based in Miami

Throughout our lives we will find many challenges that will seem impossible to overcome. My advice for all the people who are in this situation is that they do not lose faith in themselves. Each challenge helps us learn, mature and achieve what we want in our life. You are not alone! We all have the ability to overcome each of the challenges that arise in our lives, we just have to learn to trust in ourselves and in all the things we can achieve.

Sophia Habermann | Curve Model, Body Positive Activist, Entrepreneur, & Sales Representative for Skemo

A challenge should often times feel insurmountable, that is normal and inevitable. However, a challenge must be challenged itself- and that begins with you. Believe in yourself, always, and practice manifesting positive thoughts. Every struggle comes with a lesson and/or a hidden blessing, that will help you grow and prosper in the future. Never give up on your dreams and goals, even if they seem out-of-reach. Hard work, dedication, and patience will take you a long way, never forget that. Remember to be yourself and stay true to who you are, always, no matter the circumstance. Keep your head up Queen & never let that Tiara fall!

Dina Garcia | Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist & Founder of Vida Nutrition and Conscious Living

If you were to ask any successful person if they knew how they were going to achieve all they’ve achieved when they first started they’d probably all say no… but they all tried and probably failed along they way. Try to start just 1 step at a time, break your goals into smaller steps and don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.

Laura Mazon | Award-winning guitarist/Recording artist/Music Consultant/Entrepreneur in the arts

Believe. Nothing is insurmountable. Your life is what you make it, the reality is  perception, and you have the power to go. If you manage to now give up in the darkest time, in that moment of almost no hope, then, the clouds go away, and the universe starts conspiring towards your success. You are never alone in the universe!

Tatiana Alvarez | Influencer & Content Creator

My words of advice to anyone that is facing a challenge that seems insurmountable is to first taking control of their thoughts. When we refer back to scripture we realize that many of our battles, are external as they are, they are also just as internal. In the bible it says that if you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can tell a mountain to move, and it will move. So in simpler terms – instead of telling God how big your problem is, tell your problem how big your God is! After the crossing of many mountains myself, I’ve realized that every time I get to the other side it never pertained solely to me. What you’re facing now will be a testimony to others who come after you and must go through a similar situation. Every time you feel defeated, refer back to scripture and you can see story after story of people who struggled just like you and I who overcame victoriously. There’s a super natural strength in you deposited by the living God of all creation, it’s time to dig it out.
