Too many of us grew up only seeing one kind of boss or leader in the media. The lack of representation for other groups reinforced harmful stereotypes and acted as a self-fulfilling prophesy, but would our opinion of what a leader looks like be different if the media did a better job at representing the true diversity of leadership in America?
Women and other under-represented groups are already leading many great companies, organizations, & academic institutions; others are authoring best-sellers, building engaged audiences, leading movements and more.
We had the honor of connecting with many of the best and brightest female leaders from in and around the city and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
We encourage you to check out the female leaders we’ve highlighted below, follow them on social media if you find their work or story interesting and most importantly do your part to #fightstereotypes

The best way to face a challenge you think you can’t overcome is to try and change your perception towards the challenge. It is very important not to stop because of an obstacle. Even when we want to give up, we must continue. In other words, we must remain optimistic and approach the problem from a different point of view. Try to think of it as temporary, something we take day by day and will overcome. It will later just seem as a bumpy step in the road that help mold our future.

I’d tell them to step back, take a deep breath, and dissect why you think the challenge is insurmountable. Is it just overwhelming in the moment? Break apart the challenge into bite size pieces to make it not so overwhelming. Also, look for support in your family, friends, and colleagues – or you can call me 😉

For me, my Christian faith is the most important thing in my life so I would encourage them to 1) pray and ask God to help you with this challenge that feels more than you can handle 2) seek wise counsel from someone they admire or respect 3) believe that every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow. Take it one day at a time and trust the process is part of accomplishing the goal, even if the end result is different than you expect.

Try to welcome all challenges–it tends to change my mindset from frustrated to motivated. Nothing makes me feel better than having the confidence to know that I WILL find a solution to any problem I may face.

Something that has worked for me throughout difficult times is to accept that life comes with its ups and downs «This is just part of life. Failure happens» Having accepted that, we should focus entirely on what we can learn through this situation and how it can help us become a better person. If we manage to do that, in the end, it would have been beneficial.

Breathe, pray and take it one day at a time.

A challenge is only insurmountable if you believe that it is. Whatever you believe is exactly what will happen — so believe you will overcome it, and I promise you will.

Life is full of challenges, the important thing is to find the learning that each situation leaves, even the most difficult ones. As I read once: “Life is so ironic, it takes sadness to know what happiness is, noise to appreciate silence and absence to value presence”. We must face difficult situations with the certainty that everything will have a solution, and never stop fighting for what we want to achieve, regardless of the obstacles. Burying yourself in the situation only makes the moment go slower and we stop fighting. The challenges put us to the test, from there we get the best out of ourselves, they make us grow. As Virginia Satir said “Life is not what it is supposed to be. It’s what it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference”.
Joanna Holstein | Singer & Keyboardist/Pianist

These are the times to change and clear to a healthier mindset. Some things that may help is meditation, yoga, a hot bath or even a work out session. Now when you are more relaxed, you can take on the challenge. Let’s solve it! Take one step at a time – do not stress. Whatever it is, will it matter 10 years from now? You can do this! You are strong and will grow even stronger after this. Let’s show everyone and most importantly yourself that you can take on any challenge and you can do it with grace. Know that you are not alone! We all face tough battles. Don’t be afraid to ask people for help at times. One more thing! You are unique and beautiful There is only one you. You got this handled! Believe you can. Believe in yourself.

For anyone facing a challenge that feels insurmountable, the best piece of advice I can offer is to keep your eye on the prize. No dream, goal or challenge is ever too big if you believe you can achieve it. Take small steps towards your goal each day because small changes turn into big changes. There will be nonbelievers and naysayers along the way, but you have to block that out. For those who feel like they have nothing to start their goal, know that when you have nothing, you have nothing to lose! The bigger that challenge, the bigger the reward. Half the fun of having an empire is building it and that is where I’m at in my girl boss journey. As soon as I took the first step to start achieving my goal, it opened a new world of opportunities. There are ups and downs, but I’m enjoying the ride and excited for the future. I hope everyone can have that feeling at some point in their life. Everyone deserves it. Ideas that you come up with are never insurmountable. Take the first step and fill in the blanks along the way.

The best advice is very simple, everything that happens in our life has a meaning, uncomfortable and difficult situation are in our life for a reason, sometimes to make us better, sometimes to help us just take decisions for a change… And only after sometime, we realize that whatever happened was leading us to something better. So my advice is to believe in yourself and keep pushing! We are strong women and we should only move forward! I wish you all success and reach your goals so you can make new ones, bigger ones!

I would say to stay focus and take it step by step .Things take time , as an artist with a dream I can say I’ve had those moments . Nothing lasts forever …. one day we’re here the next we’re not . So pick up the pieces because you are strong enough to overcome anything and succeed in this life as the person you are. Remember , you only get one life to live and no challenge is stronger than you!

Facing challenges is a real struggle that even successful people face on a daily basis. Some tend to dwell on the negative and let fear of what can go wrong get in the way of making things happen. The key is to stay focused on the bright side and know that all obstacles either have a solution and/or soon will pass. With faith in the author of your life, all will work out as planned! Last, all the obstacles in our lives are just stepping stones to shape us into who we are meant to be and make us stronger! Never give up!

I would tell anyone facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge to pace yourself. Take it day by day and, if you need to, minute by minute. Stay positive, always look on the bright side, and count your blessings. No matter what obstacle you may be facing, it could always be worse. You will get through it, just be patient and trust the process. You are a beautiful, strong, and resilient person. Keep your head high and just keep moving forward.
