Throughout our journey with Voyage, the one thing we have learned over and over is that hidden within every challenge is a blessing or opportunity. It’s up to us to determine whether a challenge we face will be a step back or the catalyst for a step forward.
We had the honor of connecting with some of the city’s brightest female leaders and role models and we asked them our question of the month: What is the best advice you have for someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds.
Below, you’ll find their advice and links and other info so you can learn more about them, their work and how to connect with them. We’ll be interviewing many of these amazing women in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

My advise to someone who is having a challenge that they feel is insurmountable would be to take a break, but to not give up. Sometimes we need to disconnect from all that is happening around us for a moment, so we can reconnect with our inner self, to find and see the answers we are looking for.

I myself have felt like this with many obstacles throughout my life. As someone who’s gone through it, my advice is to take it day by day. Some of my biggest goals have only been successful when I took the proper steps to working towards them. I suggest writing a list of things that need to get done in order to reach the ultimate goal. Then check it off one by one (trust me, it works!). Accept the challenge with a positive mindset and try your absolute best. I believe in you!
Kat Torre | Brand Strategist
When you’re facing a challenge you feel is insurmountable, I’d tell you to ask yourself this: will this challenge, once resolved, move you closer toward your goal, to something or someone one that you want as a part of your life, your story. If the answer is no, then drop it and move on. Set your ego aside. There’s no use in suffering for something that’s not going to move you closer toward what you want. But… if it’s something you truly want (and you have to be honest with yourself here), something you’re willing to suffer for, then you’ll find a way. Take a breath. Ask for help. Educate yourself. Figure it out. Because at the end of the day, you can’t have it both ways. Either you want something or you don’t. It’s that simple. People who are struggling for something they don’t really want — they’ll come up with excuses, they’ll stall, they won’t show up and it’ll be everyone else’s fault but their own that they didn’t move past that particular challenge on that particular day and get closer toward their goal. It’s neither positive nor negative, it just is. People who do want what they’re fighting for… well, a challenge to them is just a part of the process and path they’re on to move them closer to what they want. And because they’ve made the decision with a voracity that’ll get them through the hard days, the lowest of lows, they won’t give up. So, I’ll ask again. is what you’re struggling with going to move you closer to what you want? If it is great. Let’s figure it out. Together, and if it isn’t, well… then what are you doing with your life?

I feel we all go through obstacles but we must keep moving forward. A lot of times we don’t ask for help when there are so many who are willing to help us. I am also a firm believer of prayer.

So my BEST ADVICE is to start letting go of those fears that make you believe that the challenge is insurmountable, and how do we start letting go? GIVING THANKS for everything, even the little details. When we start thanking life, God, the nature (or whatever you believe in) you start creating a high vibration in your body, which is going to help you open doors, and everything is going to come to you in the perfect way and right time, because you’re not focusing of what you need, you’re thinking of what you have being thankful and happy about it (positive vibes). Start today saying Thanks! You’ll see the change.

I have experienced a lot throughout my career that has made me question my abilities and if I was good enough. The one thing I’ve learned is that if someone is trying to diminish you, that is not your problem, it is theirs. Believe in yourself and keep pushing forward because there is nothing that is impossible as long as you are diligent, patient, and confident.

Imagine how you would feel once you overcome the challenge. Then, focus on doing whatever it takes to make it happen, you’ll see just how strong and brave you can be.

My Advice is to never give up. If the challenge is a personal goal or something you really care for, fight for it at all costs. No one has ever become a master or expert of anything without the long struggle or journey. Do you think Olympic athletes got to where they are without blood, sweat, tears and moments of insurmountable doubt? A doctor is not born into his or her profession. They work and work, and fail, and learn from mistakes and try again until they become the best. A lot of times being presented with these formidable challenges means not being afraid to ask for help from others. Outside of all the negative the world is kind and the people that want to see you succeed will help guide you along the path. The beautiful part of any journey is that it doesn’t have to be taken alone and having some guidance and supportive company along the way, when maybe you stumble or doubt yourself, can make your journey much safer and much much more enjoyable.

Remember, we all go through difficult challenges in life (including me.) Yes, it sucks. Yes, it can be discouraging. Yes, you may want to quit sometimes. I get it! My advice to you is to trust the process. Our challenging seasons make us stronger and more importantly, gives us the ability to help/relate to someone who may be in a similar situation. When others see that you made it through the storm, they will be encouraged that they can too!

Everything is possible if you believe, work for it, and pray. Nothing is easy in life but you can make than better each day.
Lin Carusi | Freelance Model
The best advice I could give is that over the years I have learned that there will always be obstacles in your path in life. It will be filled with hurdles and challenges that may seem so impossible to overcome. Don’t quit. Ever. Tomorrow is always a new day with a fresh start. Keep your head up and follow the path you want. Ignore haters and love yourself. It might take a day or it might take years, but enjoy the journey, because believe me, that’ll be what you remember the most. Lastly, happiness comes from within, so believe in yourself! Be the fighter I know you can be.

Keep working through it! I know at the moment it’s tough but I promise you’ll gain nothing but growth and confidence to face anything else that comes your way!
Keep grinding, keep pushing, and when fall, get up and try again. Make sure you count your blessings every day. Focus on positive, no matter how small it seems (sunny day, a smile from a stranger).. Because truly and really – nothing is impossible and gratitude will get you there.

Nothing is completely insurmountable. Not to sounds cheesy but, you really can do anything you set your mind to. All you have to do is shift your mind set and take risks. Tell your friends and family about your goals too. That way you’ll always have someone there to push you along when things get hard, and they will get hard. It’s ok to feel defeated, it’s ok to sit on the bathroom floor and cry while listening to sad music, but you better get up and try again. You can’t live on the bathroom floor forever.

When were faced with difficult challenges I’ve found half the battle is with ourselves. Once we strip away our doubts, believe and strategize how we WILL overcome any difficulties the actual task becomes clearer and far easier.

If you are facing a challenge in your life right now, try to remember all of the other challenges you faced in the past and how it all somehow worked out. Throughout your day, focus more on the good that is currently in your life, even if it’s just acknowledging something simple such as reminiscing on that delicious ice cream cone you had today. Keep a gratitude journal that you use first thing in the morning to list out all the good in your life to train your mind to focus more on the positives which will give you a powerful boost to face your day. Whatever your challenge is, watch or read success stories of people who were in the same situation and managed to find a way out.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help. We often believe the lie that we have to do everything on our own, when in reality utilizing and relying on people around you makes you stronger.

The best advice I would give is to never give up but not because it means you will surpass the challenge but because what you will learn will help you better understand and overcome the challenge and the many more challenges you might face. Never underestimate your strengths and ability to learn.

Too often we are faced with challenges, and of course we feel scared. I have worked with a high performance coach as well as done personal development for many years because I hate fear. Fear takes away our dreams, hopes and vision. So when I am faced with a hard challenge in life or business, I step back and analyze. What is any part? What do I need to address or let go of? Then I let faith (not religion) but faith step in to lead the way. When I let go of the fears I have about X situation, I become open to possibilities or even better opportunities. I will never forget when we lost our savings when the economy crashed in 2009. I never thought I could survive stepping into the role of financial provider for my family but I did. I could have focussed on all the excuses or I could focus on what to do next. I chose what to do next but I also let people be there for me and support me emotionally. You can overcome anything but don’t do it alone.

A challenge is just an adventure waiting to be explored. The best part about an adventure is the excitement of the unknown. You might not know where the challenge will end, but the journey holds more value and knowledge than any “”walk in the park””. When facing a challenge is intimidating, I find it important to remind yourself that the wise did not become wise by giving up or ignoring the obstacles of life. They instead lived through their challenges gaining wisdom to pass on to others.

Reading and counting my blessings is what gets me through obstacles in life. Reading let’s me get away for a bit, shifts my focus and helps me understand that anything is possible. And taking the time to physically write down my blessings makes me realize that life is truly beautiful and tough times will always diminish.

My advice is there is no challenge that cant be conquered with a plan backed by action. Solutions don’t just fall on your lap you have to seek them out. Once you tackle your challenges you will be your own existential hero.

The best advice I can give would be for you to trust the process. As cheesy as it may sound, this has proven itself to be so true. Nothing worth having and that is meant to last comes easy, Sou you must believe that overcoming a hardship is only a process to get to your better self. And also, keep going! One of my favorite quotes from the book “You are A Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” by Jen Sincero (which I highly recommend everyone to read) says this “most answers reveal themselves through doing not thinking” so to see the light at the end of the tunnel you must keep going and not let challenges make you feel defeated and discouraged. Lastly, no hardship that comes your way is meant to last and the fact that it came your way only means that you are strong enough to get through it. Nothing in the world is insurmountable. You can overcome everything if you really set your mind to it. It is much easier said than done, but the decisions you make to change your life for the better won’t always be so easy. I have been through many difficult challenges and situations I thought I couldn’t overcome, but I changed my mindset to, “ I WILL over come this, I can and I will do whatever it takes. Be grateful for challenges because you can always take a lesson out of them and come out stronger than ever. Always have faith in yourself, because you CAN overcome anything and everything.
Tiffany Wynns | Travel & Fashion enthusiast/ Content Creator
I would say sometimes when a challenge feels overwhelming. You might need to let it go, focus on something else for a day or two, clear your mind from it and then revisit that challenge. And then you might see it’s from a different perspective. Because, anything can be accomplished, maybe not all that once. So instead what you might need to focus on are the small steps you need to take to accomplish that bigger goal in the end.

My best advice is to take things one day at a time, to be open about your challenges and to be okay with asking for help and support.

You can google, and successfully find millions of inspirational quotes.. there’s nothing I can tell you that hasn’t been said before, in a more sesquipedalian manor than I’m capable of. My advice is trust God and never give up!

Mary Selep | Digital Marketing Account Manager at Pacific54
Nothing will change before you change it! Take it one little step at a time. Break the problem down into smaller goals. When I wanted to get into the marketing field after being pre-med, I volunteered my time for free to get experience multiple times, until I got a job at Pacific54, where I still work! You can feel bad for yourself or you can try to begin to solve the problem. Take baby steps and you’ll get there. Let yourself be with friends, or family, or whoever makes you feel better when facing this challenge. Keep telling yourself you will pull through, and eventually you will!
