#MiamiCreatives: the local artists who inspire us

Through a mix of mediums, formats and perspectives local artists illuminate the unknown, color the previously black-and-white and add depth to our understanding of our surroundings, our lives, circumstances and more. Through our research process for the Thought provokers series we’ve come across so many works of art that have inspired us and we’d like to share some of those great examples of visual and performing arts, photography and other creative works with you below.

Happy birthday to #YanPeiMing ! Pei-Ming is a Franco-Chinese painter based in Dijon, France, best known for his immense and almost exclusively monochrome portraits drawing on Chinese cultural history and Western portraiture tradition. Some of his most acclaimed portraits depict the figures of #MaoZedong , #BruceLee , #MichaelJackson , #PabloPicasso and #BarackObama. Alongside these public figures, Pei-Mings’ portraits extend to the more personal, includign those of his father as well as himself. The artist famously uses a long, mop-sized brush to create his iconic images, working rapidly with wet-into-wet oil paint, using either a combination of white and black, or red and white paint. . “I’m interested in everything, just as much art history as historical figures and the anonymous. The construction of history and sociopolitical issues interest me a lot. They all form our world as well as my painting.” . Image: Jean-Luc Petit
